Is a member of the vitreoretinal service at Atlanta Eye Consultants. Born in Boston, MA but raised here in Atlanta, GA, his undergraduate education was at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia where he received a degree in Molecular Biology, and graduated with honors in 2003. He went to medical school at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, graduating in 2007. His preliminary medicine internship was at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System where he was a recipient of the Arnold Gold Award for Humanism and Teaching in Medicine. He completed an Ophthalmology Residency at the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Ophthalmology, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. Additional subspecialty training in medical and surgical disease of the retina was undertaken at the Cincinnati Eye Institute associated with University of Cincinnati Department of Ophthalmology.
He has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed publications and was involved in clinical research in diseases of the retina, macula, and vitreous during his retina fellowship.
Dr. Wilkes joined AEC in September of 2013 and sees patients at the both the downtown and College Park offices. He has a strong interest and expertise in all medical and surgical diseases that affect the retina, macula, and vitreous, particularly diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, posterior segment trauma, vascular diseases of the retina, vitreoretinal interface abnormalities such as epiretinal membrane and macular hole and complications of anterior segment surgery.
Dr. Wilkes is a Board Eligible Member of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is also a member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists, Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology, National Medical Asscociation and the Atlanta Medical Association.
